The Quickest Way to Lose Weight is to Challenge Craving

2010 February 13

Lesli Hicks, a technical writer in San Antonio, loved dessert and yearned for it all the time. Cakes, pies, pastries, and candy were staples in her diet. With some lifestyle changes, she curbed her cravings, reprogrammed her tastebuds, and lost 24 pounds. This is her quickest way to lose weight story.

A trim 105 pounds in high school, I was pushing 140 by my 10-year class reunion. I wasn’t obese, just pleasantly plump. But it wasn’t comfortable.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe I didn’t weight more. Often I’d eat dessert—cakes or pastries—right after work. My biggest weaknesses were desserts containing chocolate or confectioner’s sugar, such as cakes, pastries, and custards. But I regularly gobbled an entire bag of peanut butter cups. The cravings overpowered me.

Faced with my 10-year reunion, I needed to regain control.

I bit the bullet—and the apple, substituting fruits and vegetables for doughnuts and cakes. It worked. The healthy foods provided more energy, so I started exercising, doing a session of abdominal crunches three times a week, 100 jumping jacks at a stretch, weight lifting, and hiking.

Twenty-four pounds lighter, I’m more alert and have more energy than ever. Now and then I have a peanut butter cup, but the chocolate company’s sales probably have dropped noticeably.

If someone gives me a dessert gift, I give it away or share it at work. Now I go for weeks without dessert. I’ve changed my life, not just my diet.
